Dear Brothers and Sisters,

May Jesus and Mary be in your souls.

I am writing to you in anticipation of the celebration of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ which will take place on 7 June 2026. On this day we proclaim with joy and conviction the mystery at the heart of our faith—Jesus Christ really, truly, and substantially present among us in the Eucharist (CCC 1374). This “living bread that came down from heaven” (Jn 6:51) is the source and summit of our entire Christian life (CCC 1324). With this in mind, the Church invites us to carry the Blessed Sacrament beyond the walls of our parish churches and into the streets. In this simple yet powerful gesture, the Church gives public witness to the living presence of Christ who walks with his people (Mane nobiscum Domine, 18).

Our Eucharistic processions are not simply a devotional practice; they are a visible proclamation that the Lord who feeds us at the altar, walks with us in the world (cf. Lk 24:13-35). Where there is division, indifference, and suffering, we turn to God, carrying Christ into the public square as a sign of hope, confident that God dwells with us and compels us to sanctify the world (Sacramentum Caritatis, 88-92). Our Corpus Christi processions testify that Jesus Christ is the source of life, unity, and peace for all, and they quietly but powerfully proclaim that he alone remains at the centre of our lives (St. Ignatius of Antioch, Letter to the Ephesians, 20).

The solemn rituals that accompany our celebration of Corpus Christi beautifully reflect the Church’s call to synodality as well—to walk together as the People of God, listening, discerning, and following Christ (For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission 17,28,153). These are visible manifestations of our desire to move forward as one community, united not by our own plans or ideas but by the presence of God who leads us. As we are accompanied by the Eucharistic Lord, we are reminded that Jesus walks with us always, guiding us in faith, strengthening us in love, and sending us forth as witnesses of hope for the healing of the world (Mt 28:20).

I encourage all parishes to organize their own Corpus Christi procession. The Office of Formation for Discipleship has developed the following three resources to assist you:

  • Eucharistic Triduum (three-day preparation before Corpus Christi Sunday)
    PDF / Word document
  • Eucharistic Procession Ritual (for pastors and parish liturgical teams)
    PDF / Word document
  • Eucharistic Procession Resources (includes FAQs, guidelines for processions and links to related readings and prayers)
    PDF / Word document

The three documents are provided in both PDF and Word versions to help facilitate your planning and celebration.

While it is my hope that parishioners from across the Archdiocese of Toronto will be joining their local parish community to celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, if this is not possible, please consider joining us for our 2026 Corpus Christi Mass and Procession at Saint Michael’s Cathedral Basilica on Sunday, 7 June 2026. The Eucharistic procession will take place at the end of the Noon Mass, continue in the immediate vicinity and return to the cathedral for Solemn Benediction.  I also wish to extend a special invitation to the many lay movements & associations, organizations, and religious communities in the Archdiocese of Toronto to join us. The attachment Additional Information contains important details concerning timing, vesting locations and registration.

As we prepare to celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, I would like to thank all the Pastors and Parish Teams in our various parishes that have worked diligently and generously to make this day meaningful and prayerful, and once again encourage all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Toronto to participate in this universal observance. Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, pray for us.

Sincerely yours in Jesus with Mary,

Frank Cardinal Leo
Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto
